AVALANCHE

TODAY IS UTAH'S BIGGEST AVALANCHE DANGER DAY THIS YEAR.

We have had perfect weather for avalanche. Snows, warms, cold, surface freezes, snows again, warms, cold again, surface freezes again. This may happen over an over for some number of storms. What happens is that the next storm falls on snow that is frozen so the new snow doesn't attach to the old snow. This happens layer upon layer until the overlying layers are too heavy to stick to the lower layers and began to slip. If the slope is pretty steep a whole layer or many layers may break away from the underlying layers and whoops... Down she comes!

Run for your lives!
Often a skier will ski or walk across one of these loosely bonded layers and that will shake the whole thing loose. Sometimes loud sounds, vibrations, or warm sunshine will start it.

Here is a little one.

And a big one.

And then a really big one.

Here is that little Jimmer Fredette yesterday playing TCU. Doesn't he have the cutest, most innocent face you ever saw! What a great team. Mother would love this these guys so much. They are all darling, they play well, no ball hogs and of course, Mother's favorite, they win.

UTAH IS REALLY BEAUTIFUL

Stewart Falls

This was called Breckenridge Falls when we were in college. It is a mile or so up the road from Leigh and Sadie Clark's cabin at Bricker Haven. I don't remember when they started calling it Stewart Fall. Anyway if you remember Clark's cabin, Robert Redford built his house across the way and a little down the road from them. They had that great trilobite fossil in their fireplace. In those days the Stewart's owned Timp Haven. One summer there was an accident on that old single chair and the lawsuits ruined the Stewarts. Robert Redford somehow became the owner of the place and it became Sundance. Long time ago. You could walk around the mountain from Aspen Grove or up that dirt road from Timp Haven to get to the falls. Easy walk either way.

Bridal Veil Falls tram

Remember this? Its gone now. The last year the tram was running Christian's friend John took a girl up there. They were closing for the season that night. When the crew took their last load down they must have forgotten they had customers on top. John saw that the tram was starting to move so they jumped on board thinking to ride it down. Bad luck. The car got about 1/3 of the way and stopped. Even though John was screaming his brains out, the people on the ground didn't hear a thing. They turned out the lights, locked up the place, got in their cars and left. I guess they thought nothing of the car that was still waiting in their parking lot. John's mom called us at about 2 am looking for John. Chris called all their friends and found nothing. Remembering that John had said they might go to Bridle Veil, he and John's mom, I forget her name, headed up the canyon. I waited by the phone. Very few cells in those days. John's car was in the parking lot so they called the sheriff. Still no one heard the screaming as the wind was blowing very hard. The tram car was rocking and rolling. To shorten the story, they finally realized where the kids were, called the owners, rescued the kids.

Bridal Veil Falls

Just remembered something else about Bridal Veil, very sad memory. When they were building the restaurant at the top, a bull dozer backed off the cliff and fell to the bottom. The operator was killed. He was the father of a roommate, Linda McLaughlin. So sad.
Just remembered

Opening Up Some Head Space in My Kitchen

Pantry space on the right. Behind this sheet rock wall is the washer/dryer. The door straight ahead opens into the garage.

You are looking at the space that was once the pantry. Behind these 2 x 4s is the stair well to the basement.

Now you see the window that was previously covered. Below it is the stair well. There will be eight can lights overhead.

Door to the garage. The washer and dryer move out of this space tomorrow.

THE FLAG AND SEAL OF THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH

Utah became a territory in 1847. Statehood came in 1896. A state seal was adopted at that time.

A state flag was also adopted in 1896. It consisted of the state seal on a dark blue background. The design was changed several times in the next few years the last being in 1911. That final design should be on the current official flag. It appears that is not the case.

In 1922, a flag maker altered the seal and the new flag was inadvertently confirmed by the state legislature. Apparently they did not notice the change and that flag design has continued in use to the present.

While the error has been known to exist for some time, the Utah legislature is finally considering changing the flag back to its original, legal design.

Seems it ought to look something like this one.
